Wantan Mee is a comfort food that you can eat at anytime of the day. In Klang Valley, it’s tossed in a mix of dark soy sauce, sesame oil and lard then topped with slices of caramelized char siew.
Hong Kong style wanton noodle puts more emphasis on the quality of the noodle and wontons. Here are some restaurants and hawker stalls in KL and PJ where you can get the best Hong Kong style Wantan Mee.

TZUK SHENG LAO 竹昇樓

No 103M, Jalan SS21/37, Damansara Utama
Tel: 03-7732 9103
Business hours: Mon – Fri (11.30am – 10pm), Sat, Sun & Public Holidays (8.30am – 10pm)

tzuk sheng lao Sai-Yong-Wantan-Mee
Tzuk Sheng Lao is located in Damansara Utama and is popular for its traditional duck egg bamboo noodle, made painstakingly by the sifu who needs to ride on a bamboo log to press the noodle’s ingredients together for that desirable texture.
I really disliked the alkaline odour in Hong Kong’s wonton noodle. It’s so strong that it taints the soup’s flavour, making the dish taste like soap. No kidding! That’s why the wonton noodle at Tzuk Seng Lao appeals to me – it has absolutely no alkaline taste at all. The ‘Sai Yong’ (細蓉) @ RM6.30 is served exactly like intended – in a small bowl with a portion of noodle and four dumplings underneath it.

LONG SI FU 龙师父(辉记)港式竹升面

No. 4, Jalan Lazat 1, Happy Garden, 58200 Kuala Lumpur
Tel: 012-291 1928
Business hours: 7.30am – 4pm

Char Siew Wantan Mee

The char siew at Long Si Fu is only marginally better than Tzuk Sheng Lao’s. I wouldn’t say it’s awful but it won’t particularly impress either – maybe edible at best considering there are so many great char siew stalls in town.
However, the noodle itself is good, firm and chewy with a very bouncy texture. The seasoning was spot on too, it wasn’t simply drenched in soya sauce. Gui Fei Abalone Noodle is also worth ordering. But of course the so called abalone is actually a mock abalone made with cuttlefish.

MAK’S CHEE AUTHENTIC WONTON NOODLE

LG 311B, 1 Utama Shopping Centre
Business hours: 11am – 10pm daily

Signature Sea Prawn Wonton Noodle Soup

Mak Chee‘s signature Sea Prawn Wonton Noodle Soup, or known as ‘Sai Yong’ @ RM12.90 is served with a savoury rich broth prepared from dried sole and pork bones. Hidden underneath the noodles are 4 pieces of “gold fish” shaped wonton, each containing two sea prawns encased in a thin yet firm wonton skin.
The presentation is exactly like what you’d have expected. The noodle is served in a classic petite bowl so that the noodle’s special taste and texture remain al dente and springy. Having said all that, price seems to be main complaint at Mak Chee.

HONG KONG SHENG KEE DESSERT

Lot LG 311b, 1 Utama Shopping Centre
Business hours: 10am – 10pm daily

Sheng Kee Signature Wantan Mee

Sheng Kee‘s signature Combination Noodle @ RM17.90 is a thing of a beauty. The amount of toppings that they place on the wantan noodle itself is probably worth the price. More so considering the restaurant’s setting and location. You get 3 wantan dumplings, 2 sui gao and a rather generous cut of char siew too.
The noodle’s texture is exactly like what you’d expect from a HK wantan mee, thin strands with a bite yet void of any ‘kan sui’ taste. It was nicely seasoned too and the sauce had a perfect mix of sweet and savory flavor. The char siew was just alright, so we enjoyed the dumplings more.

GRAND IMPERIAL PINNACLE SUNWAY

Suite 1-01, First Floor, Pinnacle Annexe, Persiaran Lagoon, Bandar Sunway
Tel: 03-5888 7222 / 7221
Business hours: Mon – Sat (11.30am – 2.30pm, 6pm – 10.30pm), Sun & PH (10am – 2.30pm, 6pm – 10.30pm)

BBQ Pork Egg Noodle

Even though we came to Grand Imperial for dim sum, the surprise of the meal went to the BBQ Pork Egg Noodle @ RM14.50 because it was unexpectedly good.
The thin egg noodle was nicely cooked to a springy bite, tossed in an aromatic mix of lardy sauce and served with a side of the most delicious char siew. The char siew had an intense honey flavor and the caramelisation was just heavenly. It felt like biting into pork candy, and an addictive one at that.

HONG KONG WANTAN MEE 香港鲜虾皇

Restoran WDS, Jalan SS 2/6
47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
Tel: 012-719 5030 (Vincent) / 012-203 2047 (Andy)
Business hours: 7.30am to 10pm, Closed on alternate Tuesdays

Hong Kong Style Wantan Mee SS2
The main chef manning the wantan mee stall in Restoran WDS used to work in a famous local HK restaurant chain before he decided to venture out on his own. You might not catch him in action because he’s too occupied with preparing all the ingredients – most importantly the wrapping of the wontons and meat roasting.
Since the noodles are delivered almost daily, there’s no need for excessive ‘kansui’ aka alkaline water to preserve their freshness. Texture wise, if you have an appreciation for thin HK-style wantan mee, I am sure you’d be pleased with the springy and al dente sensation you get in each bite.
Lastly, do note that the stall will be shifting their operation to Bandar Utama by October 2016. New address: Lot LG28 & 29, Center Point, Bandar Utama. Start on 1st Oct 2016, 7am to 10pm.
